Q) How does GERIFLO D TABLET SR work? A) GERIFLO D TABLET SR is a combination of two drugs: Tamsulosin (Alpha-blocker) and Dutasteride (5-alpha reductase inhibitor). Tamsulosin relaxes the muscles in the prostate gland thereby improves the symptoms and makes it easier to pass urine. Dutasteride works by lowering the production of dihydrotestosterone (hormone) which shrinks the prostate and relieves the symptoms. It also reduces the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for surgery.
Q) What is benign prostatic hyperplasia? A) Benign prostatic hyperplasia is an enlarged prostate - a noncancerous growth of the prostate gland due to too much production of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone. As the prostate grows, it can cause the urine flow to be less forceful and slower. It causes difficulty in passing urine and the need to go to the toilet frequently. There is a risk of acute urinary retention (completely blocked urine flow) if not treated. Immediate medical treatment is required. Surgery is also necessary sometimes to reduce the size of the prostate gland or to remove it.
